Dr. Mark Pfleger, OIA neuroradiologist since 1997, is President of Overlake Imaging Associates and President of Washington Managed Imaging (WMI), a state-wide organization of radiology groups. Mark was born in Pittsburg, PA, grew-up in Albuquerque, NM and has lived “all over.” When asked where he was from originally, he simply smiled and said, “All over—I lived in 11 different states while growing up.” His father’s work and pursuit of various degrees kept the family on the move. Pfleger received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Notre Dame University with hopes of becoming a theoretical physicist. Once he realized that medicine was his true calling, he decided to specialize in radiology because of his interest in anatomy. After finishing school and his fellowship, Mark moved to Santa Monica, CA with his wife to be closer to her family. When the hospital where he was working was purchased by UCLA, he looked for new opportunities. A friend from his residency program, who was a Fellow with OIA radiologist Dr. John Clemett, informed him that OIA was looking for a neuroradiologist. Dr. Pfleger met Dr. Clemett at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) conference that year, came out to OIA, interviewed and the rest is history.
In his spare time, you will find Mark on the golf course. He is quite passionate about the game being drawn to it because of the personal challenges it presents. “You really play against yourself," he said. "You enforce the rules on yourself—there are no umpires or refs.” Pfleger recently traveled to Scotland and toured the legendary links. Recollecting on his trip, he commented, “It was amazing walking and playing the courses that all the greats played.” Mark was able to experience the grandeur and frustration offered by the New and Old courses of St. Andrews and Carnoustie. His favorite discovery of the tour was the Kingsbarns Links, just outside of St. Andrews. What Is a Neuroradiologist?
